Is it ADD or ADHD?
ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) was the old name.
The manual professionals use to diagnose ADHD is called the DSM. Currently, we use the 5th version of this manual. The change from ADD to ADHD came about in the 4th version and continues in the one we use today. ADHD (Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder) is the current name in the DSM. |
But my child is not hyperactive.
This is why the term is so confusing!
In a diagnosis, the doctor will either keep the hyperactive part in or take it out. The diagnosis looks something like this: Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder: Inattentive sub-type at the severe level (individual displays no hyperactivity) or Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder: Combined sub-type at the severe level (individual presents with hyperactivity) My child moves and fidgets all the time. Why?
To get their brain working and to feel better! Movement actually helps them calm down and focus. A good rule to follow is that 15 minutes of exercise will create approximately 45 minutes of increased attention. If that was helpful, keep scrolling,
